Visitors to the museum can discover the fascinating story of this delightful waterway, its construction, use and subsequent near demise and the work done in recent times to restore it.
The Kennet and Avon Trust Museum is located in a restored Bonded Warehouse at Devizes Wharf which dates back to 1810 and was used as a grain store and later as a bonded warehouse for the towns wine merchants
This historic building houses an absorbing collection of canal memorabilia and artefacts which together tell the story of how and why the canal was originally built,
The history of who used it, how it became derelict, why it was restored and by whom.
In the Reception area, a wall display explains how the canals were used during World War 1 and 2, including written accounts from locals who lived through the Second World War and saw first-hand how it affected the canal.
Inside the Museum, there are information displays, working models, artefacts, paintings and photographs collected from along 87 miles of the Kennet and Avon Canal, all providing a fascinating glimpse of the life of the canal from the 19th right up to the 21st century.
